Muscles of the Head and Neck

This article describes the anatomy of the head and neck of the human body, including the brain, bones, muscles, blood vessels, nerves, glands, nose, mouth, teeth, tongue, and throat. The head rests on the top part of the vertebral column , with the skull joining at C1 the first cervical vertebra known as the atlas. The skeletal section of the head and neck forms the top part of the axial skeleton and is made up of the skull , hyoid bone, auditory ossicles , and cervical spine. The occipital bone joins with the atlas near the foramen magnum , a large hole foramen at the base of the skull. The atlas joins with the occipital condyle above and the axis below.

This article shall explore the anatomy of this arterial system — its anatomical course, branches, and clinical correlations. We shall start at the origin of the carotid arteries. The right common carotid artery arises from a bifurcation of the brachiocephalic trunk the right subclavian artery is the other branch. This bifurcation occurs roughly at the level of the right sternoclavicular joint. The left common carotid artery branches directly from the arch of aorta. The left and right common carotid arteries ascend up the neck, lateral to the trachea and the oesophagus. They do not give off any branches in the neck.

The cranium skull is the skeletal structure of the head that supports the face and protects the brain. It is subdivided into the facial bones and the brain case , or cranial vault [link]. The facial bones underlie the facial structures, form the nasal cavity, enclose the eyeballs, and support the teeth of the upper and lower jaws. The rounded brain case surrounds and protects the brain and houses the middle and inner ear structures. In the adult, the skull consists of 22 individual bones, 21 of which are immobile and united into a single unit.

Major Arteries of the Head and Neck

The muscles of the head and neck perform many important tasks, including movement of the head and neck, chewing and swallowing, speech, facial expressions, and movement of the eyes. These diverse tasks require both strong, forceful movements and some of the fastest, finest, and most delicate adjustments in the entire human body. The muscles of the face are unique among groups of muscles in the body. While most muscles connect to and move only bones, facial muscles mostly connect bones to skin. These muscles, including the masseter and temporalis, elevate the jaw forcefully during chewing and gently during speech.

The skeletal muscles are divided into axial muscles of the trunk and head and appendicular muscles of the arms and legs categories. This system reflects the bones of the skeleton system, which are also arranged in this manner. The axial muscles are grouped based on location, function, or both. Some of the axial muscles may seem to blur the boundaries because they cross over to the appendicular skeleton. The first grouping of the axial muscles you will review includes the muscles of the head and neck, then you will review the muscles of the vertebral column, and finally you will review the oblique and rectus muscles. The origins of the muscles of facial expression are on the surface of the skull remember, the origin of a muscle does not move. The insertions of these muscles have fibers intertwined with connective tissue and the dermis of the skin.

Bones are an important part of the musculoskeletal system. This article, the first in a two-part series on the skeletal system, reviews the anatomy and physiology of bone. The skeletal system is formed of bones and cartilage, which are connected by ligaments to form a framework for the remainder of the body tissues. This article, the first in a two-part series on the structure and function of the skeletal system, reviews the anatomy and physiology of bone.
