Biome: Definition, Types, Characteristics & Examples

Adaptation: a structure or behavior that helps an organism survive and reproduce. Conifer: a type of tree or bush that makes cones and evergreen leaves, some of which we call needles. Genre: a grouping or category of items that can include similarities, look, and subject matter. Some movie genres are mystery, horror, comedy, science fiction. Here we see two different biomes—deserts on the left and grasslands on the right.

The tropical rain forest exceeds all the other biomes in the diversity of its animals as well as plants. Most of the animals — mammals and reptiles, as well as birds and insects — live in the trees. The closest thing to a tropical rain forest in the continental United States are the little wooded "islands" found scattered through the Everglades in the southern tip of Florida. Their existence depends on the fact that it never freezes, and they often escape the fires that periodically sweep the Everglades. 3.3 Terrestrial Biomes

Its plants and animals have to survive in an environment with little water and dramatic temperature changes from day to night. Some animals and plants may find if difficult to adapt, but reptiles and cacti thrive in these conditions. They are dominated by trees and contain many different plants and animals. Forests take in the carbon that we exhale and give off the oxygen we breathe in, making them really important to our survival. This biome includes: Tropical , Deciduous , and Taiga boreal forests. Most species living in freshwater cannot live in salt water, although there are some exceptions.

Large Saguaro cacti Carnegiea gigantea pop up in various spots around a barren desert in Arizona, United States. A biome is a large area characterized by its vegetation, soil, climate, and wildlife. There are five major types of biomes: aquatic , grassland , forest , desert , and tundra , though some of these biomes can be further divided into more specific categories, such as freshwater , marine , savanna , tropical rainforest, temperate rainforest, and taiga. Aquatic biomes include both freshwater and marine biomes. Freshwater biomes are bodies of water surrounded by land—such as ponds, rivers, and lakes—that have a salt content of less than one percent.

A biome is a specific subtype of an ecosystem where organisms interact with each other and their environment. Biomes are categorized as.

Biomes and their Soils

In ecosystems, organisms interact with each other and their environment. A biome is a very large geographical area that is bigger than an ecosystem. A biome is a large area of land that is classified based on the climate, plants and animals that make their homes there. Biomes contain many ecosystems within the same area.

A biome is a major, geographically extensive ecosystem , structurally characterized by its dominant life forms. Terrestrial biomes are usually distinguished on the basis of the major components of their mature or climax vegetation, while aquatic biomes, especially marine ones, are often characterized by their dominant animals. Most of the oceans are considered part of a single biome, although areas with particularly unusual or unique physical characteristics or inhabitants may be considered as separate biomes. Similar biomes can occur in widely divergent places as long as the environmental conditions are appropriate for their development.

Grouping these ecosystems into just a few biome categories obscures the great diversity of the individual ecosystems within them. For example, there is great variation in desert vegetation: the saguaro cacti and other plant life in the Sonoran Desert, in the United States, are relatively abundant compared to the desolate rocky desert of Boa Vista, an island off the coast of Western Africa Figure 1. Figure 1. Desert ecosystems, like all ecosystems, can vary greatly. Terrestrial biomes on Earth are each distinguished by characteristic temperatures and amount of precipitation.

What's a Biome?

There are eight major terrestrial biomes: tropical rainforests, savannas, subtropical deserts, chaparral, temperate grasslands, temperate forests, boreal forests, and Arctic tundra.
