For efficient, effective and economical operation in a manufacturing unit of an organization, it is essential to integrate the production planning and control system. Production planning and subsequent production control follow adaption of product design and finalization of a production process. Production planning and control address a fundamental problem of low productivity, inventory management and resource utilization.

By PlanetTogether. Production planning and control PPC is a term that combines two strategies: production planning and production control. In the manufacturing world, production planning and control are defined by four stages: Routing, Scheduling, Dispatching, and Follow-Up. The first two stages relate to production planning while the second two relate to production control. The first stage of production planning is to determine the path of production from raw materials to finished goods.

Planning, scheduling and dispatching tasks in production control

Dispatching may be defined as setting production activities in motion through the release of orders work order, shop order and instructions in accordance with the previously planned time schedules and routings. Dispatching also provides a means for comparing actual progress with planned production progress. Dispatching functions include;. Providing for movement of raw materials from stores to the first operation and from one operation to the next operation till all the operations are carried out. Collecting tools, jigs and fixtures from tool stores and issuing them to the user department or worker. Issuing job orders authorizing operations in accordance with dates and times as indicated in schedules or machine loading charts. Issue of drawings, specifications, route cards ,material requisitions and tool requisitions to the user department.

Reflections on production planning and control PPC. The paper examines the current state of Production Planning and Control PPC , identifies some technical and systems changes that have occurred over recent years and links these with the requirements being placed on companies by the market. PPC is being asked to respond effectively to these internal and external changes by being more dynamic and providing better control of resources and delivery performance. Some of the requirements to be satisfied by the new PPC systems are identified. To meet these requirements it is suggested that better understanding is required of how different factors affect PPC systems performance and that administrative systems need improving. The quantitative, administrative and behavioural aspects of PPC are discussed. A framework for developing an agenda for action and research is provided.

In the past, the only criterion that could distinguish between the tasks was that planning is usually on a higher level than scheduling and scheduling is on a higher level than dispatching. Hence, the tasks are often ambiguous, unclear, and subject to speculation. There are few formal studies on the actual tasks of planning, scheduling, and dispatching, and there are no known studies that compare or discuss all three.

According to the British Standards Institute, there are four stages, steps, techniques or essentials in the process of production planning and control. The four stages or steps in production planning and control are: Routing, Scheduling, Dispatching, and Follow-up.
