A Guide to Antiseptics

Philip C. Carling, Gary P. As noted in the preface, Antisepsis, Disinfection, and Sterilization: Types, Action, and Resistance was developed to provide the reader with a "basic understanding of and reference for the various types, modes of action, and mechanisms of resistance of antiseptics, disinfectants and sterilants for students of microbiology, chemistry, infection control, contamination control, public health and manufacturing" p.

The author, who currently serves as a research vice-president for STERIS in the United Kingdom appropriate disclosures noted , has developed a highly accessible, very well written, and practical textbook that substantially fulfills these goals.

After the introduction, which takes particular care to clearly define the potentially confusing and frequently misused terminology of disinfection and sterilization, the book is logically divided into 5 major chapters on physical and chemical disinfection chapters 2 and 3 , antiseptics and antisepsis chapter 4 , and physical and chemical sterilization chapters 5 and 6.

In the chapters, each specific modality is reviewed in a highly structured and consistent manner i. Given the highly visible promotion and evolving use of several biocides including triclosan , heavy metals, and aerosolized fogging modalities, clear discussions of the advantages and limitations of these agents are particularly welcome.

The author's extensive use of tables throughout the text is consistently of substantial benefit in summarizing and comparing various subjects.

Although the final 2 chapters of the book involve the mechanism of action of anti-infectives and the mechanisms of intrinsic and acquired microbial resistance almost one-third of the text and provide a logically presented, well-illustrated, and approachable review of those issues, the portions of these chapters that directly relate to the subject of the book are substantially covered in other areas of the text.

Although the conclusion of each chapter contains a brief bibliography for further reading, the absence of specific references in the book precludes an analysis of the published support for the information contained in the text. The limitations of Antisepsis, Disinfection, and Sterilization relate primarily to the decision to develop a reference book for an extremely wide range of health care professionals.

From a clinical infectious diseases perspective, it would have been helpful to have more in-depth discussions related to the general principles and mechanisms of the actions of biocides, as well as the basic principles of process and product selection, which were discussed relatively briefly in the introduction.

From this perspective, it is also unfortunate that there are only limited discussions of the clinical applicability of various disinfection modalities and of the status of evolving technologies, such as those related to heavy metal impregnation of devices and environmental materials.

Furthermore, there is only a cursory coverage of antiseptics 14 pages , such as those used for hand hygiene and preoperative skin decontamination. In conclusion, Antisepsis, Disinfection, and Sterilization provides an authoritative and reasonable compromise between the needs of the clinician and the bench microbiologist in a compact and affordable volume, whose format and size will, I hope, allow it to be updated frequently.

For practicing infectious disease clinicians and infection prevention professionals, it provides a highly accessible textbook and reference manual. For the microbiologist—and particularly for students of microbiology and chemistry—the complementary chapters devoted to mechanisms of action and intrinsic and acquired microbial resistance are well worth their attention. Each major category, such as physical disinfection methods, is given a chapter, in which theory, spectrum of activity, advantages, disadvantages, and modes of action of the methods are thoroughly and clearly presented. Sufficient background on the life cycles and general anatomy of microorganisms is provided so that the reader who is new to microbiology will better appreciate how physical and chemical biocides work their magic on microbes. Topics covered include : Evaluating the efficacy of chemical antiseptics and disinfectants, and of physical methods of microbial control and sterilization ; How to choose the proper biocidal product and process for specific applications ; Classic physical and chemical disinfection methods, such as heat, cold, non-ionizing radiation, acids, oxidizing agents, and metals ; Newer chemical disinfectants, including isothiazolones, micro- and nano-particles, and bacteriophages as control agents ; Antisepsis of skin and wounds and the biocides that can be used as antiseptics ; Classic methods of physical sterilization along with newer methods, including the use of plasma or pulsed light ; Chemical sterilization methods that use ethylene oxide, formaldehyde, or a variety of other oxidizing agents ; Modes of action of biocides in controlling microbial growth and disrupting microbial physiology ; Mechanisms that microorganisms use to resist the effects of biocides. The second edition of Antisepsis, Disinfection, and Sterilization : Types, Action, and Resistance is well suited as a textbook and is outstanding as a reference book for facilities managers and application engineers in manufacturing plants, hospitals, and food production facilities.

Review of Disinfection and Sterilization – Back to the Basics

The purpose of this Guidance Document for Disinfectants and Sterilization Methods is to assist lab personnel in their decisions involving the judicious selection and proper use of specific disinfectants and sterilization methods. Antisepsis : A process involving the destruction or inhibition of mico-organisms in living tissue thereby limiting or preventing the harmful effects of infection. Antiseptic: Typically an antiseptic is a chemical agent that is applied to living tissue to kill microbes.
