The size, and hence the surface area of a particle , can be related to the physical, chemical and pharmacologic properties of drugs.

Clinically, the particle size of a drug can affect its release from dosage forms that are administered orally, parenterally , rectally and topically. The successful formulation of suspensions , emulsions and tablets ; both physical stability and pharmacologic response also depends on the particle size achieved in the product. The term was created by J.

DallaValle in his book Micromeritics: the technology of fine particles. It was derived from the Greek words for small and part. Anything smaller than this but bigger than a molecule was referred to at the time as a colloid but is now often referred to as a nanoparticle. Applications included soil physics , mineral physics , chemical engineering , geology , and hydrology. The product quality of tablets, capsules, suspensions and emulsions from the viewpoint of both uniformity and stability depends on the micromeritic properties such as particle size, shape, surface morphology, density and flowability. The study of the fundamental and derived properties of particles has a number of applications in the field of pharmacy, including the following: Dissolution: The surface area per unit weight, which is known as the specific surface, is increased by reduction in the particle size. The increase in surface area by particle size reduction increases the rate of drug dissolution.

Developed as a direct and modernized successor to the widely used Fisher Model 95 Subsieve Sizer FSSS , the Micromeritics SAS II utilizes a built-in computer and touchscreen to perform measurements easily and quickly in a laboratory setting or on a production floor. This is a crucial point, as the air permeability technique and the FSSS have been used as a benchmark for decades in many industries. The air-permeability technique is well established for measurement of the Specific Surface Area SSA of a sample powder. The SSA measured by this technique has been found to be a useful parameter in various industries such as pharmaceutical, metal coatings, paints, and even geological samples. By varying the sample height and porosity while controlling the flow rate of air through the sample, the SSA and average particle size can be determined using the Kozney-Carmen equation.

The FT4 was designed with one purpose in mind — to characterize the rheology, or flow properties, of powders. This remains a primary function today, but the instrument, accessories and methodologies have been continuously developed to the point where the FT4 is now considered a universal powder flow tester. FT4 Powder Rheometer intended for use in a laboratory environment for measuring the rheological properties of powders, pastes and semi-solids. The FT4 employs unique technology for measuring the resistance of the powder to flow, whilst the powder is in motion. The advanced control systems of the FT4 accurately set the rotational and vertical speeds of the blade, which defines the Helix Angle and Tip Speed.
