42. Design for All
Contemporary interactive technologies and environments are used by a multitude of users with diverse characteristics, needs and requirements, including able-bodied and disabled people, people of all ages, people with different skills and levels of expertise, people from all over the world with different languages, cultures, education, etc. Additionally, interactive technologies are penetrating all aspects of everyday life, in communication, work and collaboration , health and well being, home control and automation , public services, learning and education, culture, travel, tourism and leisure, and many others. New technologies targeted to satisfy human needs in the above contexts proliferate, whether stationary or mobile, centralized or distributed, visible or encapsulated in the environment. A wide variety of devices is already available, and new ones tend to appear frequently and on a regular basis. In this context above, interaction design acquires a new dimension, and the question arises of how it is possible to design systems that permit systematic and cost-effective approaches to accommodating all users. Design for All is an umbrella term for a wide range of design approaches, methods, techniques and tools to help address this huge diversity of needs and requirements in the design of interactive technologies. Design for All entails an effort to build access features into a product, starting from its conception and throughout the entire development life-cycle.

Human Computer Interface HCI was previously known as the man-machine studies or man-machine interaction. It deals with the design, execution and assessment of computer systems and related phenomenon that are for human use. HCI can be used in all disciplines wherever there is a possibility of computer installation. In India, it emerged as an interaction proposal, mostly based in the field of Design. The intention of this subject is to learn the ways of designing user-friendly interfaces or interactions.
As human life increasingly relates to and relies upon interactions with computer systems, researchers, designers, managers and users continuously develop desires to understand the current situations and future development of human computer interactions. Human Computer Interactions: Issues and Challenges focuses on the multidisciplinary subject of HCI which impacts areas such as information technology, computer science, psychology, library science, education, business and management. This book, geared toward researchers, designers, analysts and managers, reflects the most current primary issues regarding human-computer interactive systems, by emphasizing effective design, use and evaluation of such systems. Human—computer interaction HCI studies the design and use of computer technology , focused on the interfaces between people users and computers. Researchers in the field of HCI observe the ways in which humans interact with computers and design technologies that let humans interact with computers in novel ways. As a field of research, human-computer interaction is situated at the intersection of computer science , behavioural sciences , design , media studies , and several other fields of study. The term was popularized by Stuart K. Card , Allen Newell , and Thomas P. Moran in their seminal book, The Psychology of Human—Computer Interaction , although the authors first used the term in and the first known use was in

The International Journal of Human-Computer Studies publishes original research over the whole spectrum of work relevant to the theory and practice of innovative interactive systems. The journal is inherently interdisciplinary, covering research in computing, artificial intelligence, psychology, linguistics The journal is inherently interdisciplinary, covering research in computing, artificial intelligence, psychology, linguistics, communication, design, engineering, and social organization, which is relevant to the design, analysis, evaluation and application of innovative interactive systems.
When we design information technology we risk building specific metaphors and models of human activities into the technology itself and into the embodied activities, work practices, organisational cultures and social identities of those who use it. This paper is motivated by the recognition that the assumptions about human activity used to guide the design of particular technology are made active, in use, by the interaction design of that technology. A fragment of shared design work is used to ground an exploration of different solutions to one of the technical problems that arise when technology is used to support similar work over distance.
