Social Communication Apprehension: The Intersection of Communication Apprehension and Social Phobia
Communication anxiety ; Communication aversion. Communication apprehension is an emotional state expressed as an anxiety experienced by an individual in relation to anticipated or actual communication with another person or persons McCroskey The impact varies from person to person but, for many of those affected, communication apprehension tends to be associated with certain circumstances or contexts such as interpersonal communication, public speaking, and participating in meetings and group presentations. Communication apprehension is linked to communication avoidance and has been the focus of research for more than 40 years. The phenomenon was originally defined by McCroskey as an anxiety related to oral communication.
To assess the impact of collaboration on intercultural communication apprehension ICA , this mixed-methods study compared ICA levels of 41 domestic and international undergraduates who participated in collaborative activities with 79 students in a control group. International student participants came from a variety of countries, while the majority of domestic students were White. A Mann-Whitney U test was used to determine if there were differences in Personal Report of Intercultural Communication Apprehension scores across time between the experimental and control groups. The co-instructors of the collaborative group were also interviewed. Quantitative results indicate no significant differences in ICA levels due to the collaboration.
Apprehension and Communication
Communication apprehension is the level of anxiety triggered by the real or anticipated communication act, as defined by McCroskey. The term communication apprehension is usually connected with 'stage fright';  however, this response is not necessarily connected with a delivery on a stage or in front of a large audience. There are different types of communication apprehension, each of these types represent a specific or general situation that presents a stimuli for this anxiety response. McCroskey argues that there are four types of communication apprehension:. Trait anxiety is considered a personality type, which represents that the individual has an orientation to feel anxiety during the communication act regardless of the situation, audience or context.
