Public relations PR can help raise your business' profile and improve your reputation. If done well, it can be a cost-effective way to get your message to a large audience. However, it can be tricky to guarantee success.
Although there were ancient public relations—as far in the past as ancient Greece—modern-day public relations in the United States began with a group of revolutionaries mounting a public relations campaign to turn public opinion in favor of independence from England and King George. The revolutionaries effectively used words and actions to mount a successful activist campaign leading to the Revolutionary War. These 85 essays were, according to the assessment of Grunig and Hunt, exemplary forms of effective public relations.
Traditional PR vs. Digital PR: What You Need to Know
According to the Public Relations Society of America PRSA , public relations is defined as a strategic communications process that builds mutually beneficial relationships between organizations and their publics. There are two forms of public relations, traditional PR and digital PR, which are differentiated by tactics, including the way these relationships are built and the channels in which they reach their audience. The media tactics that fall under the umbrella of traditional public relations are diverse, such as event coordination, crisis communications, reputation management, trade shows, sponsorship opportunities and press release distribution. The most prominent initiative of traditional PR is press outreach with special focus in traditional media outlets such as newspapers, television and radio. Professionals who work at traditional PR firms are likely to have a rolodex of media contacts they engage with often who are familiar with their clients. Traditional PR can be very successful in terms of increasing brand awareness.
Public relations (PR)
Public relations PR is the practice of deliberately managing the release and spread of information between an individual or an organization such as a business, government agency, or a nonprofit organization and the public in order to affect the public perception. Public relations PR and publicity differ in that PR is controlled internally, whereas publicity is not controlled and contributed by external parties. Public relations aims to create or obtain coverage for clients for free, also known as 'earned media', rather than paying for marketing or advertising. But in the early 21st century, advertising is also a part of broader PR activities. An example of good public relations would be generating an article featuring a client, rather than paying for the client to be advertised next to the article. Public relations professionals typically work for PR and marketing firms, businesses and companies , government , and public officials as public information officers and nongovernmental organizations , and nonprofit organizations. Jobs central to public relations include account coordinator, account executive, account supervisor, and media relations manager.
Government Public Relations: Public Diplomacy or Propaganda?
They all have one thing in common: communications. But as a journalism major focus on broadcast news with an interest in PR, I have come to notice many similarities and differences in these two particular professions from my educational experiences. Communicate with the public In both journalism and PR, professionals are constantly communicating with the public.
Governments’ Use of Public Relations and Propaganda
Political communication can be defined as persuasive communication that seeks to implicitly or explicitly advance political goals. Government public relations falls under political communication because it advances the government's goals. Whether the government's political goal is to inform or persuade, the government will not shy away from communicating with the people. What is more difficult to discern, however, is what implicit political goals if any the government is attempting to advance.
Constitutions organise, distribute and regulate state power. They set out the structure of the state, the major state institutions, and the principles governing their relations with each other and with the state's citizens. Britain is unusual in that it has an 'unwritten' constitution: unlike the great majority of countries there is no single legal document which sets out in one place the fundamental laws outlining how the state works.
There is a widely held perception amongst the general public that there is no genuine difference between propaganda and public relations. This is a view also advocated by some communication scholars who equate these two terms. Although there are a number of parallels between public relations and propaganda, there are also fundamental differences. The definitions of public relations are so numerous that it is difficult to give one which would find universal consent. For this paper and in order to illustrate the difference to propaganda most efficiently a definition, which stresses the importance of mutual understanding between the organisation and the public, as well as the benefaction to both, will be used. Propaganda, in contrast, attempts to solely advance the interests of the propagandist and shows disregard for advantages to be gained by the receivers during this communication process. Having defined the key terms, the parallels between propaganda and public relations, which often make a distinction between the phrases difficult, will now be discussed.
