Mao Zedong and China's Revolutions

The creation of the PRC also completed the long process of governmental upheaval in China begun by the Chinese Revolution of The Chinese Communist Party, founded in in Shanghai , originally existed as a study group working within the confines of the First United Front with the Nationalist Party. Chinese Communists joined with the Nationalist Army in the Northern Expedition of —27 to rid the nation of the warlords that prevented the formation of a strong central government. Frustrated by the focus of the Nationalist leader Chiang Kai-shek on internal threats instead of the Japanese assault, a group of generals abducted Chiang in and forced him to reconsider cooperation with the Communist army. The Nationalists expended needed resources on containing the Communists, rather than focusing entirely on Japan, while the Communists worked to strengthen their influence in rural society. These undemocratic polices combined with wartime corruption made the Republic of China Government vulnerable to the Communist threat. The CCP, for its part, experienced success in its early efforts at land reform and was lauded by peasants for its unflagging efforts to fight against the Japanese invaders.

The Political Economy of Reform in Post-Mao China

The philosophical difference between Maoism and Marxism—Leninism is that the peasantry are the revolutionary vanguard in pre-industrial societies rather than the proletariat. This updating and adaptation of Marxism—Leninism to Chinese conditions in which revolutionary praxis is primary and ideological orthodoxy is secondary represents urban Marxism—Leninism adapted to pre-industrial China. The claim that Mao Zedong had adapted Marxism—Leninism to Chinese conditions evolved into the idea that he had updated it in a fundamental way applying to the world as a whole. From the s until the Chinese economic reforms of Deng Xiaoping in the late s, Maoism was the political and military ideology of the Communist Party of China and of Maoist revolutionary movements throughout the world. In the late s, the Peruvian terrorist group Shining Path developed and synthesized Maoism into Marxism—Leninism—Maoism , a contemporary variety of Marxism—Leninism that is a supposed higher level of Marxism—Leninism that can be applied universally. At the turn of the 20th century, the contemporary Chinese intellectual tradition was defined by two central concepts: i iconoclasm and ii nationalism. By the turn of the 20th century, a proportionately small yet socially significant cross-section of China's traditional elite i.

He combined the roles of Lenin and Stalin. The personality cult around Chairman Mao culminated in outrageous veneration in the s and his memory today elicits strong feelings, both positive and negative. Despite his many mistakes and towering cruelty, he is still widely respected in China, as can be seen from his appropriation in popular culture. His ideas continue to be influential in parts of Asia and Latin America and his image is still invoked by contending interests in China.
