As a result, he encouraged more interactive activities to promote cognitive growth, such as productive discussions, constructive feedback, and collaboration with others. Vygotsky also stated that culture was a primary determinant of knowledge acquisition. He argued that children learn from the beliefs and attitudes modeled by their culture.

Lev Vygotsky – Sociocultural Theory of Cognitive Development

Child development theories focus on explaining how children change and grow over the course of childhood. Such theories center on various aspects of development including social, emotional, and cognitive growth. The study of human development is a rich and varied subject. We all have personal experience with development, but it is sometimes difficult to understand how and why people grow, learn, and act as they do. Why do children behave in certain ways? Is their behavior related to their age, family relationships, or individual temperaments? Developmental psychologists strive to answer such questions as well as to understand, explain, and predict behaviors that occur throughout the lifespan.

Furthermore, the theoretical concepts presented herein provide part of the foundation for constructivism and have contributed greatly to the restructuring of formal educational systems [ 1 , 3 ]. As such, culture serves as a mediator for the formation and development of specific abilities, such as learning, memory, attention, and problem solving. It is proposed that culture-specific tools play an integral role in the way children organize and think about the world. The most important development in early childhood social cognition is the development of theory of mind. The basis of this crucial ability lies in the development of theory of mind. The development of theory of mind from birth to 5 years of age is now well described in the research literature 4,5 — or at least, we can describe how infants and children behave in experimental situations as well as in natural settings. There are problems, however, in interpretation of the findings. This contradiction can be resolved by taking a developmental view of theory of mind — that is, early-developing intuitive awareness later becomes more reflective and explicit.
