Highly skilled environmental scientists are critical for the safe and responsible governance of our environment. This environmental management degree will give you the ability to carry out environmental assessments and audits, handle environmental information and work with geospatial data. Your course leader is a data scientist and spatial analyst with research interests in how patterns in environmental factors affect human wellbeing and biodiversity. This course is based at Highfield. The programme specification sets out the learning outcomes of this course and details how the course is taught and assessed.
The construction industry is one of the least sustainable industries in the world; using around half of all the resources that humankind consumes. Yet society depends on construction to grow; making it increasingly important to find ways to reduce its impact. Environmental assessment methods were conceived in order to drive improvements in the built environment. They provide common methodologies that enable the environmental impact of buildings and building products to be measured, evaluated and reduced. This unit explores the important role that environmental assessment and monitoring plays in reducing the environmental impact of the built environment. On successful completion of this unit students will be able to undertake an environmental assessment of a building and compare its performance against other similar buildings. Students will understand the types of environmental impact that a building can have and how this affects the environment over time.

It can also be used to refer to follow-up evaluations of EIA processes themselves. At the project level, follow-up takes place after approval decision-making and once a development activity has been implemented, although preparation and details of follow-up programs should be determined during the pre-decision stages of EIA. Follow-up is essential for determining the outcomes of impact assessment activities. By incorporating feedback into the EIA process, follow-up enables learning from experience to occur. A more detailed account of the principles can be found in Marshall et al
Managing Editor: G. Environmental Monitoring and Assessment discusses technical developments and data arising from environmental monitoring and assessment, principles in the design of monitoring systems, and the use of monitoring data in assessing the consequences of natural resource management and pollution risks. The journal examines monitoring systems designed to estimate exposure both at the individual and population levels, and also focuses on the development of monitoring systems related to the management of various renewable natural resources in, for instance, agriculture, fisheries and forests. Coverage extends to the use of monitoring in pollution assessment, and particular emphasis is given to the synthesis of monitoring data with toxicological, epidemiological and health data, as well as with pre-market screening results. High quality research papers or reviews dealing with any aspect of environmental monitoring are encouraged. However, papers should not be submitted that do not advance scientific knowledge on environmental monitoring issues.

Environmental Impact Assessment Review
Environmental monitoring describes the processes and activities that need to take place to characterize and monitor the quality of the environment. Environmental monitoring is used in the preparation of environmental impact assessments , as well as in many circumstances in which human activities carry a risk of harmful effects on the natural environment. All monitoring strategies and programs have reasons and justifications which are often designed to establish the current status of an environment or to establish trends in environmental parameters.
